Darrius ShawHow do we know afterschool programs work for our students? Meet Darrius Shaw, the Texas Youth of the Year for Boys and Girls Club. Raised by his great-grandmother in Oak Cliff, Darrius attended the local Boys and Girls Club since he was 6 years of age. The staff and volunteers at Boys and Girls Club served as his extended family, mentors and tutors throughout his youth.

A graduate of Townview High School, Darrius is now bound for NYU's engineering program with $50,000 in scholarships. He's also one of 5 candidates for the national Youth of the Year, to be named September 15, 2010 in Washington, D.C. If selected, Darrius could earn up to $110,000 in college scholarships.

Darrius knows that his afterschool provider made the difference in his life. Now it's his turn to make a difference in the lives of other young men. Watch the WFAA After the Bell segment about Darrius.
