Kids are Cooking (and Learning) in the Kitchen Afterschool
Hundreds of Dallas kids are cooking in the kitchen afterschool, and reinforcing their math and English skills in the process. The Junior League of Dallas' "Kids in the Kitchen" curriculum is a cooking, nutrition and fitness program designed to aide in the fight against child obesity and poor nutrition. Thanks to the sponsorship of UnitedHealthcare, DASN has been able to implement this curriculum at afterschool sites operated by Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas, Dallas Community Lighthouse, Wilkinson Center and the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas.
DASN Introduces "Tiered" Member Agencies
DASN knows quality matters. Research from Child Trends indicates, "...adolescents in high-quality programs were more likely to avoid risky behaviors, to have better performance in school, and to have greater social competence, over and above the control variables, than those in no program. Moreover, we consistently found that adolescents in a low-quality program have similar outcomes to adolescents not in a program at all."
Trinity River Mission Helps Child...and Mother!
Ally Lopez was 6 years of age when she and her mother came to the U.S. from Mexico. Neither spoke a word of English. But Maria, Ally's mom, knew that Ally would never succeed in American schools if she didn't learn English quickly. Fortunately for Ally, her mother was told about Trinity River Mission (TRM), an academic-focused afterschool program in their West Dallas community.
DASN Introduces Membership Tiering
Dallas AfterSchool Network is working hard to ensure every child has access to quality afterschool experiences. In order to serve as many children as possible, community resources - financial, human and in-kind - must be invested wisely. Likewise, the resources and efforts of Dallas AfterSchool Network are best spent with those agencies that continually pursue quality improvement for the benefit of the children they serve.
From Gangs and Arrests to Afterschool and Good Grades
Jasmine was just 12 and in the the 6th grade when she started to disengage from Jasmineschool. Nothing in the classroom captivated her attention. She had no clubs, sports or activities to pursue afterschool. "I had nothing to do afterschool so I was bored," she says. In search of excitement, she started hanging out with the wrong crowd and ultimately was arrested three times before the age of 15.

DASN Sends 500 Students to the House of Blues... to Learn History!
Think the House of Blues nightclub is just for adults? Think again. Thanks to a new partnership between the International House of Blues Foundation and Dallas AfterSchool Network, more than 500 Dallas-area students were invited to the HOB this summer to learn...history!
Oh, The Fun We Had Learning This Summer!
So much for kicking back and relaxing during these long, hot summer months. Dallas AfterSchool Network and its member providers know that the 10 to 12 summer weeks away from instruction and reading takes a toll, causing a lot of students to actually regress academically. The cumulative effect of this "summer slide" year-after-year creates two-thirds of the academic achievement gap between low-income students and their more advantaged peers.
