Kids are Cooking (and Learning) in the Kitchen Afterschool

Hundreds of Dallas kids are cooking in the kitchen afterschool, and reinforcing their math and English skills in the process.  The Junior League of Dallas' "Kids in the Kitchen" curriculum is a cooking, nutrition and fitness program designed to aide in the fight against child obesity and poor nutrition.  Thanks to the sponsorship of UnitedHealthcare, DASN has been able to implement this curriculum at afterschool sites operated by Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas, Dallas Community Lighthouse, Wilkinson Center and the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas.

DASN knows quality matters. Research from Child Trends indicates, "...adolescents in high-quality programs were more likely to avoid risky behaviors, to have better performance in school, and to have greater social competence, over and above the control variables, than those in no program. Moreover, we consistently found that adolescents in a low-quality program have similar outcomes to adolescents not in a program at all."

Ally Lopez was 6 years of age when she and her mother came to the U.S. from Mexico. Neither spoke a word of English. But Maria, Ally's mom, knew that Ally would never succeed in American schools if she didn't learn English quickly.  Fortunately for Ally, her mother was told about Trinity River Mission (TRM), an academic-focused afterschool program in their West Dallas community.

Jasmine was just 12 and in the the 6th grade when she started to disengage from Jasmineschool. Nothing in the classroom captivated her attention. She had no clubs, sports or activities to pursue afterschool. "I had nothing to do afterschool so I was bored," she says. In search of excitement, she started hanging out with the wrong crowd and ultimately was arrested three times before the age of 15.

Play to LearnDASN trained nearly 300 new summer program staff with fun and active learning at our Play to Learn Expo on June 4. Participants learned new skills such as classroom management, developing hands-on curriculum to keep students academically engaged during the summer and bringing science and math into the summer program environment.

Y Musical On May 11, more than 500 guests attended Dallas AfterSchool Network's inaugural Afterschool Achievers awards ceremony at the Lakewood Theater. Hosted by Rob McCollum, WFAA-TV, 20 Dallas AfterSchool Network member programs recognized 40 students for their academic, athletic, artistic or leadership accomplishments. Students from the YMCA, Big Thought, Dallas Community Lighthouse, Richardson ISD PACE and St. Anthony Community Center entertained with songs, dances and other performances. WFAAWFAA Channel 8 has partnered with the Dallas AfterSchool Network to produce the twice-weekly After the Bell segment that showcases what happens in our community during out-of-school hours. After the Bell airs every Monday and Wednesday at 6:20am. Every week new segments are also posted to DASN's website.
